Family Day

11/27/2009 Human Observations
Family Day
The day after the day of thankful tribute is labeled “Family day’, by those who celebrate the joys of life. However, there are those for whom this day is a potential nightmare. On this day back in 1966, the Philadelphia Police Department, along with bus and taxi drivers, encountered a massive influx of travelers, either shopping for bargains, or preparing for the annual Army - Navy NCAA Football game. As though seen from an over head view, they charted the increasing growth of the traveling crowds below until the chart seemed to be virtually “blackened” with travelers. Thus, as first noted by the Philly P.D., Black Friday was born. It was not a term of endearment in their minds, citing the difficulties that tend to accompany large swarms of humanity. Even prior to that moment, retailers came to appreciate this day as the first day of Christmas shopping, one that would return their sagging first fiscal quarter sales figures into profitability; from red ink to black ink. Thus, economically speaking, they too, came to accept “Blitz” Day (a football term meaning an “all out defensive attack on the quarterback”) … as Black Friday. So, once again, it is but a matter of American perspective; since the Thanksgiving Holiday is a purely American day of celebration (officially started by George Washington, by the way):
Some view life from a position of economics, making merchandise of the souls of the population, through material enticement. Others accept this day after Turkeyday as “Family Day”, a day to further digest the appreciation of the bonds of love and friendship. The eyes see what the heart desires.
