08/14/2009 Human Observations
The “good citizens” raised their combined voice to express their moral outrage at the antics of Coby Bryant … for months. Again, the same voice speaks out against Mike Vick. Yet, I hear no lingering moral echoes concerning Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, Louisville Coach Rick Pitino, or the infamous Governor of South Carolina. Are Coby and Mike more evil than these other offenders, or are the good citizens simply less apt to forgive when the offenders are not Caucasian? Consider well the motivation that fuels the “moral” outrage. The standards of those who sit in moral judgment are the same standards by which they shall be judged. When mercy is desired, shall it be found? Remember, mercy is NOT receiving the punishment that is deserved, and grace is receiving UN-deserved, UN-merited favor. All that we have was GIVEN to us. Not one of us created the wealth or comfort that we may enjoy. We were simply chosen, out of a population in excess of 6 billion, to receive such comfort. To take the acquisition this GIFT to oneself is to usurp the authority of the ONE who made such comfort possible. Nevertheless, in the benevolence of our own self importance, seek out mercy and freely distribute grace. Freely you have received … freely give.
